In Term 1 we said farewell to Stu, our bearded dragon, as he has retired now and is living very comfortably out of the spotlight! Thank you to Michelle for sharing Stu with us.
In Stu’s place, we welcomed two leaf insects and three hermit crabs to our preschool pet family.
Last year we also welcomed three chickens, Snow White, Night Wolf and Penny, and three Budgies, Gordon, Apple, and Buddy. We also have some fish in our foyer too!
Pets at preschool are an extension of the children’s learning about being responsible for the environment. Observing and caring for these animal instils a sense of responsibility and respect for life going forward. A preschool pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans. Children learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival. They also learn how their behaviour and actions affect other living beings.
